1. Conductor :-
Each individual length of wire lying within the magnetic field is called the conductor.

2. Turn:-
A turn consists of two conductors connected to one end by an end connector.

3. Coil:-
When one or more turns are connected in series and the two ends of it are connected to adjacent commutator segments it is termed as a coil.

4.Coil side :-
Each coil, single-turn or multi-turn,has two sides called the coil side.

5. Coil Group :-
A coil group may have one or more single coil.

6. Winding :-
Number of coils arranged in coil groups is called the winding.

7. Inductor:-
One of the wires making up the coil side is called the inductor.

8. Front end connector:- 
 A wire that connects the end of a coil to a commutator segment, is called the front end connector.

9. Back end connector:-
 A wire that connects an inductor on one side of coil to an inductor on the other side of the coil is called the back end connector.

10. pole pitch :-
It is the distance measured in terms of number of armature slots (or armature conductor) per pole.
Thus if a 4-pole generator has 16 coil, then number of slots = 16

11.Front pitch :-
It is the distance measured in terms of armature conductors between the coil sides attached to any one commutator segment.

12. Back pitch :-
It is the distance measured in terms of armature conductors between the two sides of a coil at the back of the armature.

13. Resultant pitch :-
It is the distance measured in terms of armature conductors between the beginning of one coil and the beginning of the next coil to which it is connected.

14. Commutator pitch :- 
It is defined as the distance measured in terms of commutator segments between the segments to which the two ends of a coil are connected.

15. Coil pitch or coil span :- 
the distance between the two sides of a coil is called the coil span or coil pitch.

16. Full pitched coil :- 
If the coil span or coil pitch is equal to pitch (i.e. distance between the two sides of a coil is 180 degree electrical),it is called full pitched coil.

17. short pitch or fractional pitch :- 
If the coil span or coil pitch is less than the pole pitch (i.e. coil pitch is less than 180 degree electrical), then it is called short pitch or fractional pitch.
